Finding Compassion in China A Bicycle Journey into The Countryside Cindie Cohagan 9780985009656 Books
This book was an excellent book about Cindi's bicycle travels about the food and customs of China not the shinny picture that the news media wants us to believe but the true hardships the people there face day to day. She describes to what lengths the people in China go to control pictures and information on what goes on from the rest of the world. I really found the Prayer Wheel an interesting experience and the detail she gave about the energy she felt when she placed her hand on the pray wheel made me wish there was a way I could go and visit and take part in the prayer wheel ceremony myself to feel that energy. I recommend this book as one you sit on your swing on a fall day and open it up and enjoy your trip to China.Pam

Finding Compassion in China A Bicycle Journey into The Countryside Cindie Cohagan 9780985009656 Books Reviews
This was a very interesting travel book about a couple riding their bikes through China. The author brought to life the experiences she had with many different types of people in China. It was very enjoyable.
Really enjoyed the book -- much more than I expected to. Author painted a very compelling and detailed picture of the places, events and people she came to know while injecting her own poignant story into the narrative. It was just the right balance. I will read her next publication for sure.
Enjoyed reading this book...better than many travel stories where so much time is spent in bars drinking .
The author would have enjoyed Laos and Thailand where Buddhism are practiced freely.. I lived there and worked in a center for crippled children..and have fond memories of those days
I don't often read this kind of thing, even though I'm a pretty big traveler myself, but I really enjoyed this book about Cohagan's travels on bicycle through China. Even though it's a nonfiction narrative, I found myself reading it more like an adventure story...staying up too late at night just to read "one more chapter." To me the mark of a really great book is an unwillingness to put it down, so I'm so glad I picked up a copy. I actually found myself fighting over my kindle with my boyfriend, who was reading it too, ha. Not only does she cover a lot of the beautiful scenery and the difficulties of travel by bicycle in all kinds of weather, terrain and altitudes, but what I really loved is how she delves into both the Chinese and the Tibetan cultures. The harrowing experiences with the Chinese military after a snafu where her then-husband takes pictures of some Chinese "farmers" is only the beginning. At times it reads almost like a spy novel, but it's all the more chilling because Cohagan makes it clear that this is everyday life for most Chinese and Tibetans, who are under almost constant surveillance by their own people and their own government. Still, the generosity and loveliness of the people of China and Tibet really shines through Cohagan's words, and you really get the sense that this is a Buddhist country at heart...not only Tibet, but China, too. A very lovely book, that is much more about bringing people together than pointing out their differences. I'm looking forward very much to more books from this author!
I enjoyed this book so much that I also read the first two books on bicycle touring written by Cindie and Tim Travis. I love to travel, but had never considered touring by bike. In fact I had not ridden a bike in over 25 years. This book inspired me to start riding on Jan. 1, 2014 , and to my surprise I fell in love with cycling. At first I could just barely ride a mile, but after 9 months of training I completed a one week solo mini-tour for my 60th birthday.
Thanks Cindie (and Tim) for sharing your travel experiences with us! Thanks to this book, I have found an activity/sport that I will continue to do as long as I am physically able to climb into the saddle.
I have been to China many times as a Chinese teacher. This has made me look at China a little differently and helps me realize or understand how my other western friends have been treated there. I am a White male and have been a political guest in China many times. I go and do as I wish with a Chinese ID card. Without that there are many restrictions on foreigners that this book helped me realize. However, I have never seen the religious restraints she talks about in the book as I have met many relogiously active people in China. But they were not Buddhists. I guess that is the difference. Loved the book.
Just finished reading Cindie Cohagan's "Finding Compassion in China A Bicycle Journey into the Countryside." I had visited China about seven years ago, but my trip was very different as it was a Chamber of Commerce sponsored journey with a large group of local friends. A wonderful trip, indeed and I'm thankful I was able to see China. However, "visiting" China through Cindie's eyes is a totally different experience. I found myself holding my breath throughout several passages, waiting to see what happened next! What a journey it was -- a very brave one. I loved reading about Cindie "connecting" with the people which is what I try to do as best as possible when I travel. Her empathy for those around her shines through and her appreciation of the beauty of the country. I could feel my bones aching after the long, hard travel days in all kinds of weather. Cindie is definitely an intrepid traveler. This is a good read and I'm looking forward to more books by this author telling of other journeys.
